What is NEES?

The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) provides a national resource that will shift the emphasis of earthquake engineering research from current reliance on physical testing to integrated experimentation, computation, theory, databases, and model-based simulation. As a national resource, NEES:

  • Includes 15 major earthquake engineering experimental research equipment installations networked through the high performance Internet. [Initially through 2004, NEES will include equipment sites funded through NSF program solicitations. NSF envisions, however, that other globally significant earthquake engineering equipment sites will participate in NEES and bring unique experimental capabilities to NEES.]
  • Is operational through September 30, 2014.
  • Improves the seismic design and performance of our Nation's civil and mechanical infrastructure systems.
  • Uses advanced experimental and simulation capabilities to test and validate more complex and comprehensive analytical and computer numerical models.
  • Provides end-to-end system connectivity to operate distributed experimental research equipment, including teleobservation and teleoperation, and to enable computation and distributed simulation for earthquake engineering experimentation.
  • Provides researchers with remote access to a curated repository of databases, user-developed simulation software, and models for use in model-based simulation and visualization through access to a computational grid.
  • Forms an integrated network that facilitates interdisciplinary global collaboration among scientists and engineers.
  • Enables participation from a broader earthquake engineering community, including educators, students, practitioners, and public sector organizations and individuals, who will have access to the equipment, data, models and software from NEES.

What is SEESL?

SEESL is the acronym for the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory. The laboratory was founded in 1981 with the construction of Ketter Hall and it was equipped with 5 DOF shake table (in 1983) and a strong floor. The lab provided services to the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) and to the Multidisciplinary (former National) Center for Earthquake Engineering (MCEER) since 1986. The SEESL was expended with the addition of two new shake tables, a new testing floor, a new reaction wall, a biaxial laminar box, a two stories nonstructural components simulator and several advanced controlled loading systems including integrated computational and physical simulations.

The laboratory provides currently services for research for the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES)(see UB-NEES) and for the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER), for the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE), and for R&D for Industry. The SEESL maintains older equipment (developed by UB and MCEER), and new one developed under NEES initiative and funding.

What is UB-NEES?

The UB-NEES is an Equipment Site in the national Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation which provides sercices to the NSF sponsored projects or those approved by the NEESinc Board of Directors. The UB-NEES facility has following services:

  • Two Earthquake Simulators, known also as Shake Tables:
    • Two relocatable 7.0m x7.0m platforms with six-degrees-of-freedom, 50 tons payload each
  • A two stories bi-axial Shaking Table system used as Non-structural Component Simulator
  • A 175 m2 Strong Reaction Wall for reactions to horizontal loading devices (actuators) for large scale testing
  • A 340 m2 Strong Testing Floor for vertical reactions and tie downs of large scale models
  • A bi-axial Laminar Box for 1.0 g soil testing
  • Reconfigurable assemblies of Static and Dynamic Servo-controlled Actuators with advanced control systems (STS, Flextest, etc)
  • A High Performance Hydraulic Power Supply with flow exceeding 6000 litters per minute (1600 gallons per minute)
  • High speed wide band Local and Wide Area Gigabit Networks interfaced and supported by with NEESit services
  • Tele-presence & Tele-operations capabilities for local and wide area collaborations in real time
  • Advanced Dynamic, Pseudo-dynamic, and Static Testing Capabilities including a generic advanced procedure ôReal Time Dynamic Hybrid Testing" (RTDHT)

The UB-NEES team
